Seven fundamental principles, directly inspired by the Red Cross principles, guide the French Committee of the Blue Shield: - Integrity : The Red Cross uses the word “Humanity”, representing all human being. Concerning cultural heritage “integrity” means respect of the integrity of the cultural identity of a nation represented by its cultural heritage.
- Impartiality : Cultural heritage at large must be protected, whatever the country, its religious, political and economical context. Priority should be given to cultural heritage.
- Neutrality : The French Blue Shield must not participate in conflicts of any kind such as wars, political, religious, ethnic or ideological controversies.
- Independence : CFBB should always preserve its autonomy in order to be able to follow ICBS principles.
- Voluntary Service : Non profit help is the rule.
- Unity : CFBB is the sole representative of ICBS in France. It intervenes inside the French territories. Abroad, it may act on request of ICBS.
- Universality : The protection of cultural heritage is a universal duty. National committees have equal rights and must help each other in the framework of ICBS.
